Set Up Simple Voice Chat

Proximity voice chat, the extra UDP port, and Velocity networks

Simple Voice Chat adds proximity voice chat: you hear players near you, quieter as they walk away. Players need the Simple Voice Chat mod on their own game too (Fabric, NeoForge or Forge, or a launcher like the Modrinth app that installs it).

The port problem

Voice chat sends audio over its own UDP port (default 24454). On our panel, your server can only receive traffic on ports listed on its Network page. If voice chat uses a port that isn't listed, players see voice chat not connected.

Single server

  1. Ask us for an extra allocation. It appears on Network as a second port, e.g. 40031.

  2. Install Simple Voice Chat from Minecraft Plugins and restart once.

  3. Stop, then edit the config:

    • Paper: plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties
    • Fabric/NeoForge: config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties
    port=40031
    bind_address=

Use your extra port. Don't use -1 (the game port): its own comments warn this can crash the server, because the game port's UDP is also used for server query.

  4. Start. Players join and press V to open voice settings. The icon shows when it's connected.

Velocity network

  1. Install the Simple Voice Chat Velocity plugin on Velocity, and the normal plugin/mod on every back-end.
  2. Velocity needs one public UDP port for voice. By default it's Velocity's own game port. Set it in Velocity's voice chat config if you want another.
  3. Each back-end needs a different voice port, because all our servers share one machine. Ask us for an extra allocation per back-end and set each port= to its own number.
  4. The Velocity plugin finds each back-end's voice port and forwards audio to it. Players only ever talk to the proxy.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Fix
Voice chat not connected for everyone The port isn't allocated, or port= doesn't match the allocation. Check Network.
Works for you but not friends Their mod version doesn't match. Check the server's version in the console at start-up.
Connected but nobody hears anything Check the in-game voice settings (V) for microphone and mute. Also check max_voice_distance in the config.
